Mother’s Day 2020 votive candle holder.
This one was borne out of a last-minute panic, and it came out better than I could have imagined.
So I’ll be honest, I don’t remember exactly how I made this one, but I did have the interior heart pieces sitting on my workbench for a long time after the fact. I’m pretty sure I made this with nothing but a cheap scroll saw.
So you can obviously see the front and back are laminated onto the core to give it a two-tone look. I love two-tone or contrast, to the point that I probably shouldn’t ever try to design a whole room because I’d likely make it too busy. But I digress.
I thought my scroll saw was too shallow to cut this depth, but I don’t see any other way I could have had the heart pieces laying around afterward. I think this really was as simple as selecting two different woods, gluing, cutting, and finishing with some paste wax.
The recesses for the candles would definitely have been easier to do with a drill press, but I’m pretty sure I did it with a hand drill and a forstner bit. I definitely would not recommend that, but it worked well enough in this case. Still, next time will involve a jig on the drill press to hold them safely.
